Skala, the Brazilian brand of the one-kilo pot (and why it's coming to France)
Skala was born in 1986 in Uberaba, a city in the interior of Minas Gerais, far from anything typically seen on postcards, where the factory is one of the major employers. The brand still manufactures there. And it was from there that its signature format originated: the one-kilo hair treatment cream, at a time when deep treatments were sold in small pots that were meant to last.
There, it's called the potão — the big pot. It's not just a packaging detail; it's a way of styling hair. One kilo means you don't skimp: you take a real handful, spread it strand by strand, let it sit while you finish washing, and repeat the following week. The pot isn't put away in a cupboard: it lives on the edge of the bathtub, and the gesture is learned from a sister, a cousin, a neighbor.
From 2023 onwards, videos of at-home hair routines popularized the potão outside of Brazil: Brazilian economic press (InfoMoney, Exame) documented the significant increase in exports to the United States that followed. It's this movement that eventually brought the one-kilo pot to French bathrooms.

A country where hair care is not a luxury
To understand Skala, you need to look at what hair represents in Brazil. A country where straight, wavy, curly, and coily hair coexist, often within the same family. A country where hairstyling has a political history: that of chemical straightening, long endured, then the claimed hair transition, those months when one lets their natural texture grow out over still-treated lengths. Taking care of one's hair there is not a Sunday indulgence. It's a social time, knowledge that is passed down, a conversation that lasts as long as the treatment is left on.

This is the line that Skala defines by the condition of the hair and not its shape: lengths that break when detangling, porous ends, hair dulled by coloring, heat, or hard water. The brand targets several profiles, from straight to very curly, without assigning a curl pattern code — because damaged hair is treated first and foremost as damaged hair. This is the range we recommend starting with if you're unsure.

Straight or straightened hair, frizz, unwanted volume: #Mais Lisos
1A – 1C
The official name is spelled #Mais Lisos, hashtag included: it is printed as such on Brazilian bottles. Skala publishes an explicit target here — naturally straight or straightened hair, 1A to 1C — and formulates the line to tame frizz and lighten volume. If your hair is wavy and you're looking for a more aligned effect, this is a use we readily recommend, outside the official target of the range; on strongly curled hair, it risks weighing it down without providing the desired effect, and the texture range would be more appropriate.

Skala targets this range for curly, very curly and transitioning hair: that moment when you stop relaxing, when the root regains its spring while the lengths remain smooth and fragile. Two textures on the same strand, two different needs, one product to manage both. Many women go through this period without advice. The brand does not publish any curl pattern codes for this range: it is defined by a moment, not by a curl shape. We do not invent any.

- The technique On towel-dried hair, section by section, from mid-lengths to ends. One to two times a week: for very tight textures, you are never stingy with product.

The question comes up with every order, so it's best to answer it frankly. We sell two 3-in-1 styling creams of 250g. The curl leave-in belongs to the Skala Expert #Mais Cachos line, which the brand targets for all curl patterns from 2C to 4C: it's the only reference from this line that we offer. The other belongs to Crespo Divino. In both cases, "3-in-1" refers to the same triple function: treatment, leave-in, and heat protection. The manufacturer advertises a heat protection function up to 230 °C for both products.
- What separates them The Crespo Divino 3-in-1 leave-in is formulated to support hair transition: hydration and the coexistence of two textures. The 3-in-1 curl leave-in with heat protectant (#Mais Cachos) is formulated for definition: well-defined curls, bounce, controlled volume.

The Skala 1 kg mask: the format that made the brand famous
Each of the three routines has its one-kilogram pot, and this is the format the brand established in Brazil. Be careful, though: they are not all used in the same way. The Skala Bomba de Vitaminas 1 kg mask is a simple, rinse-out treatment cream. The Mais Liso 1 kg 2-in-1 treatment cream can also replace shampoo once a week, as a co-wash: massage, leave on, rinse. The 1 kg afro hair mask is used as a deep rinse-out treatment.
How many uses in a 1 kg pot?
For medium-length hair, allow 30 to 40 g per application, the equivalent of two large tablespoons: one pot then covers 25 to 33 treatments. For long, very thick or very dense hair, allow 50 to 60 g, or 16 to 20 treatments. These are usage estimates and not a guarantee: consumption depends mainly on length and density.
Leave-in time and frequency: how to use a Skala mask
Leave-in time indicated on the packaging, generally 5 to 20 minutes: the instructions on the pot you receive are the reference. Many people cover their hair with a shower cap or towel during application. Then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water: residue from the treatment cream can weigh down and dull the appearance of the lengths. Once a week is sufficient in most cases; twice if your lengths are colored or very dry.
In Brazil, they don't even talk about "routine" but about cronograma capilar: a hair schedule that alternates hydration, nutrition, and protein intake over several weeks. Also find all our Brazilian hair masks.
Skala composition: vegan formulas, and the sulfate question
Skala declares its entire range vegan since July 2018. Vegan formulas: no animal-derived ingredients (manufacturer's certificate available on request). This is a brand declaration, not a certification issued by a third-party organization: to our knowledge, no independent vegan label covers the range. We therefore state it for what it is, a manufacturer's declaration.
Second clarification, on sulfates. On the Crespo Divino shampoo, sodium laureth sulfate appears in second position on the INCI list we noted, just after water, combined with a softening betaine. For the other two shampoos, we make no claims until we have noted the INCI with the bottle in hand: check the full composition on each product page, and on those of our other Brazilian shampoos. If your routine excludes sulfates, Crespo Divino shampoo will not meet your needs: many people then combine a suitable wash from another brand with the Skala pot for treatment. This is common practice, not an exception.

Your Skala routine in 4 steps: shampoo, conditioner, mask, leave-in
Four steps, one Sunday afternoon, nothing more. The example below uses the Bomba de Vitaminas range, the most universal; apply the same steps from the range that corresponds to your hair type.
Wash, then truly wring out
A pea-sized amount of Bomba de Vitaminas shampoo 325 ml on the scalp, massaging: the lather will run down the lengths by itself when rinsing. Then wring out by hand and towel dry — the treatment should absorb, not slide off.
Detangle
The Bomba de Vitaminas conditioner 325 ml on the lengths, two minutes, wide-tooth comb while it works. This is the step designed to facilitate detangling.
Apply the treatment, in sections
The one-kilogram pot, generously: two to four sections, from the middle of the lengths to the ends, avoiding the roots. 30 to 40 g is enough for medium-length hair. Leave on for 5 to 20 minutes, then rinse completely with lukewarm water.
Finish with the leave-in
A 250 g leave-in styling cream on damp hair, strand by strand, then air dry or diffuse.

Why Skala prices vary so much from one site to another
For hair care, packaging, logistics, and distribution weigh heavily on the final price. Skala built its model on the one-kilogram format and long production runs.
Only one container instead of five
A one-kilogram pot means one mold, one lid, one label, and one pass on the filling line — versus five times all of that for the same quantity in 200g pots. Per gram, packaging costs almost nothing. This is the brand's historical format.
Volume drives the price
According to the Kantar panel reported by Brazil Journal and Exame (February 2024), Skala accounts for 52% of the Brazilian hair treatment cream market. With this volume, a production line is amortized over quantities that a niche production cannot achieve.

Frequently asked questions about Skala
Is Skala suitable for colored or bleached hair?
The manufacturer designs the Bomba de Vitaminas line for weakened and chemically treated hair fibers, making it the logical starting point after coloring or bleaching. No Skala product is a re-pigmenting treatment: it does not maintain color, it works on the appearance and suppleness of the fiber. Check the full composition on each product's page, and test on a strand if your color is recent.
Is Skala tested on animals?
The answer is regulatory before being commercial: Article 18 of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 prohibits animal testing for any cosmetic marketed in the European Union, including imported products. So this is not a peculiarity of Skala, it is the rule that applies to everything you find on shelves in France.
Can Skala be used after a Brazilian blowout?
Don't get confused: Skala is not a Brazilian blowout, it's a maintenance treatment. After a keratin straightening in a salon, respect the no-wash period indicated by your hairdresser. Then, the logic is the opposite of intuition: chemically straightened hair is weakened hair, for which the Bomba de Vitaminas range is formulated. This is the most consistent option, and Crespo Divino takes over if you later decide to let your natural texture grow back.
Are Skala products really made in Brazil?
Yes. Production is Brazilian, historically concentrated at the Uberaba site in Minas Gerais, where the headquarters and historic factory are located. References intended for the European market go through an official export circuit, with a person responsible for market placement established in the Union: this is what ensures labeling and composition compliant with European regulations. This is the circuit we purchase from, and we check each batch upon receipt.
Is Skala still a Brazilian family brand?
Manufacturing remains in Brazil, in Uberaba. Ownership, however, has changed since 2024. What this means for you: nothing about the formulas, nothing about the manufacturing location.
How long can a one-kilo jar be stored once opened?
Refer to the PAO symbol – the small open jar – on the back of the packaging: it indicates the period of use after opening. Two habits extend the product's life: using a clean spoon or hand rather than wet fingers in the shower, and sealing it tightly. If the smell, color, or texture changes, do not use it anymore.
Is Skala also suitable for men and children?
The fifteen references we offer are family hair care products, without a strong gendered scent: there's nothing stopping the whole household from using the same jar, and this is precisely the Brazilian custom. The brand does publish lines dedicated to men and children, but we do not stock them to date. For toddlers, prefer a product specifically formulated for them.
